This business speaking activity for ESL students is designed to simulate a real-world startup pitch.

In groups, students create a digital product or service using a fixed budget of 300,000 Baht, then present their idea and answer business-style questions.

The activity develops fluency, persuasive speaking, and practical business English skills in an engaging, structured format.

Group Work - Startup - Digital Product

  1. The Goal: Plan a digital product/service with a 300,000 Baht budget.
  2. You will give a pitch (sell your idea!)
    • what is your business?
    • who uses it?
    • where does the 300k Baht go
  3. Then Q & A
    • the other group will ask the questions below

  • What type of company are you?
  • How are you going to make money?
  • Who is your target customer?
  • How do you connect with your customers?
  • Why are you better than the competition?
  • How is your business going to succeed?
  • What are your goals?

Student Task: Business Pitch

  • Brainstorm (20 minutes)
  • Pitch (3 minutes)
    • No slides, no notes, just talk
  • Q & A (7 minutes)

Business Vocabulary

  • A problem is something that frustrates people or makes their life difficult in their daily routine.
  • A “pain point” is the specific part of that problem that hurts the most or wastes the most time/money.
  • A Digital Solution is a smart idea to fix the problem using technology, like a mobile app, a website, or a digital gadget. It explains exactly how your technology makes the user’s life easier.
  • Core Values are your beliefs and morals that guide how your company behaves and makes decisions every day (like honesty, teamwork, or protecting nature) and are usually written in your mission statement.
  • Target Customer This is the group of people who need your product the most and are most likely to buy it. You define them by their age, their hobbies, or their daily habits.
  • Business Analysis Tools These are simple frameworks or checklists (like a SWOT chart) that help you look at your business clearly. They help you find your company’s strengths and spot any hidden dangers before you spend money.
  • Payment Models This is the method you use to collect money from your customers to make a profit. For example, do they pay one time, buy a monthly subscription, or use the app for free while seeing advertisements?

Useful Phrases for Speaking (with Thai)

Pitching Your Idea (การนำเสนอไอเดีย)

  • “Our business is called…” (ธุรกิจของเราชื่อว่า…)
  • “Our target customers are…” (กลุ่มลูกค้าเป้าหมายของเราคือ… )
  • “It solves the problem of…” (มันช่วยแก้ปัญหาเรื่อง…)
  • “We will spend the 300k on…” (เราจะใช้เงินสามแสนบาทไปกับ…)

Payment Models

  • One-time payment (จ่ายครั้งเดียว) — The customer buys it once and owns it forever.
  • Subscription / Monthly fee (ค่าบริการรายเดือน) — The customer pays a small amount every month (like Netflix or Spotify).
  • Free with Ads (ฟรีแต่มีโฆษณา) — The customer uses it for free, but they must watch advertisements (like YouTube free).

Concept Words

  • Problem (ปัญหา) — Something that is broken or difficult.
  • Solution (ทางออก / วิธีแก้ปัญหา) — The way to fix a problem.
  • Customer (ลูกค้า) — The person who buys your product.
  • Budget (งบประมาณ) — The total money you have to spend (300,000 Baht).
  • Cost / Expense (ค่าใช้จ่าย) — Money you must pay to build or run your business.
  • Price (ราคา) — The amount of money the customer pays you.
  • Profit (กำไร) — The money you keep after paying all your expenses.
  • Advertisement / Ad (โฆษณา) — Pictures or videos to show people your product.

Brainstorming & Negotiating (ระดมความคิดและต่อรอง)

  • “What about making an app for…?” (ทำแอปเกี่ยวกับ…?)
  • “I think we should build…” (ฉันคิดว่าเราควรสร้าง…)
  • “Let’s spend more money on…” (เราควรใช้เงินเพิ่มไปกับ…)
  • “We don’t have enough money for that.” (เรามีเงินไม่พอสำหรับเรื่องนั้น)

Agreeing & Disagreeing (การเห็นด้วยและไม่เห็นด้วย)

  • “I agree with you.” (ฉันเห็นด้วยกับคุณ)
  • “That’s a great idea!” (เป็นไอเดียที่ดีมาก!)
  • “I’m not sure about that.” (ฉันไม่ค่อยแน่ใจเรื่องนั้นเท่าไหร่) (A polite way to disagree)
  • “I think it is too expensive.” (ฉันคิดว่ามันแพงเกินไป )
