SAT Central Ideas for ESL Students

SAT Central Ideas helps ESL students learn how to find what is called the central idea (what the author is trying to say) in SAT reading passages.
Why Learn the Central Idea?
For English language learners, identifying the central idea help to:
- Understand: understand the big picture not confusion at word level
- Improve: you can use clues more to help with meanings of new words.
- Faster: you can read texts faster, to know what is important
- Summarize: helps to be able to summarize a text (paraphrase)
- Critical Thinking: Ianalyze why the author wrote the text evaluating what supports the main argument.
There are 2 to 4 Central Ideas questions in the SAT Exam
Exercise 1 Find the Central Idea
- Find the central idea, ask yourself: “What is the author trying to say about this topic, lesson, or experience?”
- Listen to the passage:
Main Idea vs Central Idea
- Main idea: A student had Christmas dinner with their family.
- Central idea: Even though the student was bored at first, spending time with family made the evening enjoyable and meaningful.

Shelled pteropods, commonly known as sea butterflies, are increasingly exposed to ocean changes, but some species are more vulnerable to this threat. In a new study, published this month in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, British Antarctic Survey (BAS) scientists examining pteropod life cycles in the Southern Ocean have found that some species might be more vulnerable to this threat due to different timings of their life cycle.
- Read the passage
- Find the central idea, ask yourself: “What is the author trying to say about this topic, lesson, or experience?”
Main Idea vs Central Idea
- The main idea is that some sea butterflies are in more danger from changes in the ocean than others.
- The central idea is that scientists discovered that different sea butterfly species grow and live at different times of the year, and this may make some species weaker against ocean changes
The main idea is the general topic of the passage.
The central idea is the important message or explanation the writer gives about that topic.
In this passage:
- Main idea: Some sea butterflies are more affected by ocean changes.
- Central idea: Scientists found that differences in life cycles may make some species more vulnerable.
To find them:
- Ask “What is the passage mostly about?” → main idea
- Ask “What important point or explanation does the writer give?” → central idea
